Amended EIS Guidelines for Buckland Park Proposal

17 September 2008

Amended EIS Guidelines have been issued for the expanded ‘Buckland Park Country Township’ development proposal.

The Minister for Urban Development and Planning, Paul Holloway, says the Development Assessment Commission issued the original Environmental Impact Statement guidelines in September last year.

“The proponents have since lodged a revised Development Application that expands the area of land to be covered by the proposed country township, north of Adelaide,” Mr Holloway says.

“This request has prompted DAC to adjust its original guidelines for the EIS to take into account the larger area covered by the proposed development.”

Walker Corporation and DayCorp have requested an expansion of the project to 1,300 hectares from 1,000 hectares to allow the development to better manage water issues on the site, among other things.

The proposal is now for a township of 15,300 dwellings serviced by a town centre, school, shopping and commercial facilities, medical centre, community and library facilities and sports and recreation facilities.

The revised EIS guidelines detail more than 100 separate environmental, social and economic matters to be addressed by the proponent, including:

  • Potential flooding issues
  • Infrastructure issues (water, sewerage, stormwater, public transport)
  • Water use issues (supply, impacts on groundwater, water reuse and harvesting)
  • Possible construction and ongoing impacts on the local environment, including waterways
  • Impacts on and from adjacent industries, and
  • Demands on community services

Mr Holloway says the requirement for an EIS is part of a rigorous assessment process conducted under the major development provisions of the Development Act.

The publication of the EIS will trigger at least six weeks of public and agency consultation, including a public meeting. The proponent is required to publicly respond to submissions before a decision is made on whether the proposal will proceed and whether any conditions should be imposed.
